Lot and pip: what they are and how much 1 lot costs in trading

A lot is the trade volume: in forex, 1 standard lot equals 100,000 units of the base currency, and one pip on EUR/USD with such a lot costs $10. The broker's margin, profit and loss are calculated from these two numbers. Confusion begins when "1 lot" is carried over from currency to other markets. For gold, oil, indices and Moscow Exchange stocks, the same figure stands for a completely different volume.

Lot in simple terms: trade volume in the terminal

In trading, a lot is the batch of an asset in a single trade. You set the volume to 1.00 in the terminal and buy a standard batch, the size of which the broker has recorded in the instrument specification. One dollar or one share has nothing to do with it.

In MetaTrader 5, position volume is set in lots. For each symbol, the platform stores the contract size, minimum volume, volume step, point size and tick value. These numbers are entered by the broker. That is why "1 lot" at two brokers for the same instrument sometimes means a different volume.

Trade in MT5
1Volume 0.10you enter lots
2x 100,000EUR/USD contract size
310,000 eurosthat much is in the trade

Lots add up. Open two trades of 0.5 lot of EURUSD in MetaTrader 5 netting mode, and the terminal will show one position of 1 lot. In hedging mode, two separate positions of 0.5 will remain.

A lot on an exchange is also the minimum batch you can buy or sell. Only on the Moscow Exchange stock market it contains 1, 10, 1,000 or more shares, depending on the security.

Forex lot: standard lot, mini lot, micro lot and nano lot

In the currency market, the lot size is almost always a multiple of 100,000 units of the base currency. The base currency comes first in the pair: in EUR/USD it is the euro. A standard EUR/USD lot equals 100,000 euros, and smaller lots are fractions of it.

For pairs where the dollar is quoted second (EUR/USD, GBP/USD), the pip value on a dollar account is fixed. The rate changes, but a pip on a standard lot still costs $10. That is why EUR/USD is the most convenient pair for learning to count.

The broker specifies the minimum and maximum volume in the contract specification in MT4 or MT5. In the LiteFinance example for EUR/USD, you can open from 0.01 lots (1,000 euros) to 10,000 lots. At the Russian forex dealer Alfa-Forex, the minimum lot is also 0.01 with a step of 0.01.

For scale: according to the Bank for International Settlements survey, in April 2025 the over-the-counter currency market turned over $9.6 trillion per day, 28% more than in 2022. The dollar was on one side of 89.2% of trades. A private trader with a small account trades fractions of a lot on this market. We explained how a currency dealer differs from a bucket shop, where the client plays against the house, in the article what forex is in simple words.

How much money is 1 lot: margin and leverage

Buying 1 lot of EUR/USD does not require 100,000 euros in the account. The broker blocks a deposit (margin), and leverage provides the rest. The margin is calculated as follows: rate x contract size / leverage.

Capital.com gives an example at a EUR/USD rate of 1.04248. With 30:1 leverage, the margin is 3.33% of the volume, and a standard lot requires about $3,471.46. A micro lot in the same trade would require a hundred times less, about $34.71. At Alfa-Forex, the same formula in the example with 1:40 leverage: 1.3684 x 100,000 / 40 = $3,421.

1 lot EUR/USD100,000 euros

Margin at 30:1: about $3,471

Pip: $10

0.01 lot EUR/USD1,000 euros

Margin at 30:1: about $34.71

Pip: $0,10

The rates in both examples are old; today the margin figures will be different. The calculation scheme itself does not change.

Margin shows how much money the broker holds against an open position. It does not say how much you will lose. Loss is calculated by the pips the price moved against you, multiplied by the pip value. A 1-lot position with $3,471 margin loses $500 over 50 pips against you.

Leverage is limited by regulators. Under ESMA measures of 2018, a retail client in the EU gets no more than 30:1 on CFDs on major currency pairs and 20:1 on minor pairs, gold and major indices. On other commodities the limit is 10:1, on shares 5:1, on cryptocurrencies 2:1. There are also two protection rules: the broker closes positions when equity remains at 50% of margin, and the client's balance cannot go negative.

0.01 lot - how many dollars is that

0.01 lot on EUR/USD is 1,000 euros in the trade. One pip on such a volume costs $0.10, ten pips - $1, one hundred pips - $10. With a small account you start with a micro lot: with $100 at 30:1 leverage, Capital.com calculates roughly 0.03 lots as available, that is 3,000 units.

Example: in a day EUR/USD moved 80 pips against your position. On 0.01 lot that is $8. On 1 lot that is $800, eight percent of a $10,000 account.

On USD/JPY or EUR/GBP the pip is calculated in a different currency, and $0.10 per micro lot will not apply there.

Pip: what it is and how a pip differs from a point

A pip (percentage in point) is the step of change in a currency pair's rate. Most pairs are quoted with four decimal places, and a pip equals one unit of the fourth decimal, 0.0001. For pairs with the Japanese yen, a pip equals one unit of the second decimal, 0.01. If EUR/USD rose from 1.3000 to 1.3010, the rate moved 10 pips. On five standard lots (500,000 euros) such a move yields $500.

Confusion starts with the fifth decimal. Platforms began showing quotes with an extra digit, and the minimum price step (tick) is now sometimes ten times smaller than a pip. This tenth of a pip is called a point or pipette. On a five-digit quote, 1 pip = 10 points; on a three-digit USD/JPY, a point equals 0.001.

0,0001

Pip

4th decimal, for the yen 0.01
0,00001

Point, pipette

5th digit, 1/10 pip

LiteFinance example: the rate rose from 1.20251 to 1.20274. That is 23 points, or 2.3 pips. Want a stop-loss of 20 pips - in a five-digit terminal, count 200 points. Mix up the units and your stop will end up ten times closer than you intended.

In the stock market, the word "point" means a third thing: a whole unit of price. An Amazon share that rose from 3,284.7 to 3,305.4 gained about 21 points. Further on in the calculations, a pip equals 0.0001 (0.01 for the yen), and a point is one tenth of it.

Pip value: EUR/USD, USD/JPY and cross rates

The pip value depends on the pair and on the lot size. It is calculated in two steps: the pip size is multiplied by the contract size, then the result is converted into the account currency.

For EUR/USD, the result comes out in dollars right away: 0.0001 x 100,000 = $10 per standard lot. For USD/JPY, the pip comes out in yen: 0.01 x 100,000 = 1,000 yen. At a rate of 145.00, that is 1,000 / 145.00 = $6.90. The more yen they give per dollar, the cheaper the pip is in dollars.

For a cross rate without the dollar, one more rate is needed. For EUR/GBP, a pip on a standard lot equals £10. In a dollar account, it is multiplied by the GBP/USD rate: at 1.28, that comes to $12.80.

You don't have to calculate it manually every time. In MetaTrader 5, the tick value is recorded in the symbol properties, next to the contract size. Just keep in mind that a tick on a five-digit quote can be one tenth of a pip.

1 lot of gold at a CFD broker is usually 100 troy ounces. The price moved by $1 per ounce, and a 1-lot position made or lost $100. At 0.01 lots that is $1. Gold has no single pip: some brokers call $0.01 a pip, others $0.10. For gold it is more reliable to count in dollars of price movement.

Brokers usually sell WTI crude oil in a contract of 1,000 barrels; some brokers have mini contracts of 100. Index CFDs are structured differently, with a lot of 1 to 100 index units. Fxnx gives an example: a 30-point pullback on the US30 or NAS100 index at 1.00 lot can take off $300 or more. The cash value of a point for an index and for EUR/USD at the same 1.00 lot is different, so the volume for an index is calculated anew.

On the Moscow Exchange, 1 lot of gold is 1 gram. The GLDRUBF futures contract is quoted in rubles per gram, the tick size is 0.1 rubles and it costs 0.1 rubles.

How many shares are in 1 lot on the Moscow Exchange

The Moscow Exchange calls a lot the unit of measurement of a package of securities in a trade. This is the minimum quantity that can be bought or sold. One lot can contain 1, 10, 1,000, 10,000 or 100,000 shares. The amount of money needed to buy is calculated as follows: security price x lot size.

Price per lot - what is it in the broker's app? If it says "price per lot", it means the price of one share has already been multiplied by the number of securities in the lot. A Gazprom share on 02.11.2026 cost 114.76 rubles, with 10 shares in a lot, so 1 lot would have cost 1,147.6 rubles.

According to the trading rules, the standard lot defaults to one security. The exchange itself sets a different size for individual securities, in the tables accompanying the trading rules. The size is reviewed once every six months, and changes take effect from the first trading day of March and September. Outside this schedule, the lot is changed if the issuer requests it. In the RPS and "Odd lots" modes, the lot is always equal to one security.

Therefore, check the number of shares in a lot in the security's card before buying: figures from old articles may be outdated.

Lot size from risk: formula and example

Lot size is calculated from the amount you are willing to lose on a trade and from the distance to the stop-loss. Risk management starts with this calculation, and the deposit only sets the risk amount. The formula is: lot = risk amount / (stop in pips x pip value per 1 lot).

$10,000 account
11% risk$100 per trade
225 pip stopon 1 lot this is $250
30.4 lots$100 / $250

$10,000 account, 1% risk, meaning you can lose $100 on the trade. You buy EUR/USD at 1.0800 and place a stop-loss at 1.0775, which is 25 pips. On 1 lot such a stop would cost 25 x $10 = $250. Divide: 100 / 250 = 0.4 lots. A take-profit at 1.0850 will give 50 pips, that is $200.

EUR/USD: buying 0.4 lots with a 25 pip stop

Take profit 1.0850: +$200Entry 1.0800Stop 1.0775: -$100

Conditional example, not real quotes. 1 pip on 0.4 lots = $4.

Need a wider stop, 50 pips? The lot is halved, to 0.2. The loss when the stop is triggered is the same in both cases, $100. You cannot adjust the stop to the desired lot: first the stop level based on the chart, then the volume. We showed how to choose this level in the article stop-loss and take-profit: how to set and calculate risk.

Round a fractional result down. In the Alfa-Forex example, the calculation gave 0.14 lots, and the broker advises taking 0.1: this way the risk will not exceed the plan.

The formula also works for gold if you substitute the correct price movement. Suppose a lot contains 100 ounces, the risk is $100, and the stop is $5 from the entry. On 1 lot such a stop costs $500, meaning the volume is 0.2 lots.

Lot on a prop account: how not to burn the daily limit with one trade

On a prop account, a mistake in lot size costs more than on your own. The prop company sets a daily and overall loss limit as a percentage of the account. If you violate the limit even once, the account is closed, and the challenge fee is not refunded.

Let's take a two-phase challenge for $10,000 at FTMO or Era Trade. According to the PropMarketCap catalog as of 04.11.2026, the daily limit for both is 5%, that is $500, and the overall limit is 10%, that is $1,000. A 25 pip stop on 1 lot of EUR/USD triggers - you have lost $250, half of the daily limit.

Bars - the share of the $500 daily limit taken by one EUR/USD trade with a 25-pip stop. A scenario, not a forecast: limits from the PMC catalog as of 04.11.2026, pip value $10 per lot.

Two consecutive stops at 1 lot, and the day is over: the $500 limit is exhausted. Four stops eat up the total $1,000 limit. At 0.4 lots you have five attempts per day and ten for the whole account.

Other programs have tighter limits. The Funded Way's Starter program has a 3% daily limit, which on a $10,000 account is $300, and the same stop at 1 lot takes up 83% of the day.

Before buying a challenge

The challenge is paid, most traders fail it, and the fee is non-refundable if you fail. The account is usually simulated, and the prop firm pays the payout from its own funds under the terms of the contract. Trading with leverage can lead to the loss of all deposited funds.

Limit rules differ for each program. Read them before buying, then you can calculate the lot in advance: how to do this is explained in the free PMC Academy lesson on challenge rules. How much the attempts themselves cost and where hidden extra fees lurk is covered in the article how much a prop account costs. If prop trading is still a new term for you, start with the explainer what prop trading is and how a challenge works.

Lots in sales, at auction and in procurement: what it means to sell as one lot

The word "lot" does not only live in the terminal. In sales, lots are numbered batches of goods. Wiktionary defines a lot in economics as a batch of goods under a specific number that is put up for auction or sold in a transaction. Any group of goods offered as a single whole is also called that. To sell as one lot means to sell everything together, not in parts.

An auction lot is a single item or group of items put up for bidding as one unit. This is how the Christie's auction house explains it. Each lot is given its own number, which participants use to follow the bidding and place bids, and the numbers set the order of sale.

In real estate, a lot is an apartment or other property sold at auction. Organizers list such lots on electronic trading platforms, participants bid, and the highest price wins. If the property was not sold at previous auctions, it is offered at public sale, and the price of the lot is reduced in stages.

In procurement, a lot is also a group of goods, works or services purchased as a single whole. ConsultantPlus's collection on Law 44-FZ includes a separate analysis of which goods, works and services can be combined into one lot. For a closed auction, the law requires registering participants for each lot if there are several lots.

Lots at Tele2, the lot in the Bible and an old unit of weight

At Tele2, lots were offers on the "Market": there, subscribers sold each other minutes and gigabytes from their tariff package. The buyer chose an offer from the list of available lots, and the money went to the seller's phone account. According to the operator's press release, in 2021 internet lots accounted for 93% of transactions, subscribers bought 124.7 PB, and the number of lots listed grew by 62% over the year. The operator is now called T2.

The lot in the Bible is Abraham's nephew, the son of his brother Haran. When Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed, two angels led Lot's family out of the city. The Synodal translation of the Book of Genesis (19:26) says: "But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt."

There are two more old meanings. A lot was also the name of a sea instrument for measuring depth. And the lot was a Russian unit of mass equal to 12.8 grams until the switch to the metric system in 1918.

Summary

A lot is the trade volume that the broker sets in the symbol specification: 100,000 units of the base currency on forex, usually 100 ounces for gold, and from one share on the Moscow Exchange. A EUR/USD pip costs $10 per lot and $0.10 per 0.01 lot. Calculate the lot from your risk amount and stop length, and on a prop account also check it against the daily limit.
