The Financial Times reported that US intelligence linked Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang to a woman believed to be an agent of Chinese state security. The reference is to Alice Huang, a top manager at Singapore-based Megaspeed. No charges have been filed against anyone.
The basis of the publication is a memorandum. This is an internal memo by American officials for a narrow circle. It was written this year based on intelligence data and was not published.
For a trader, the point is in the timing. The story came out when the market had already closed. The reaction of Nvidia shares will only be seen at the opening on Monday.
What happened with the shares?
- $186.64 - Nvidia's closing price on Friday.
- 2.78% - the gain for that session.
- about a tenth of the company's value was lost in the week before the material.
- $181.60 - Thursday's low.
The gain says nothing. Trading closed hours before the publication came out. The first reaction to the story will only be visible on Monday.
What does the memorandum say?
- The relationship. Huang was in a relationship with Alice Huang, a top manager at Singapore-based Megaspeed - an Nvidia client.
- Recruitment. The intelligence community believes she was recruited by China's Ministry of State Security.
- Timing. The document was shown to a narrow circle of senior officials shortly before Donald Trump's trip to Beijing to meet with Xi Jinping.
- Silence. The White House and the CIA declined to comment, the Chinese embassy in Washington did not respond to a request, and Alice Huang could not be reached.
What does Nvidia say?
Huang spoke about Megaspeed back on October 29, before the publication. In an interview with Bloomberg, he called working with this client "normal and not outside the ordinary."
- On supplies: "we examined all deployments of our chips and recounted every one."
- On the client: Nvidia calls Megaspeed an ordinary regional cloud client.
- On past allegations: the company considers accusations of reselling chips to China a year ago "thoroughly investigated and refuted."
What does this mean for a trader?
The story has no legal force. No charges have been filed against any of the participants, there is no public finding of a violation, and the memorandum itself has not been published. The intelligence assessment remains an opinion.
The main point: on Monday you will have to trade on rumor, not on a fact of violation. How a prop account reacts to a gap after the weekend is covered in the academy.
What's next?
The nearest point is earnings. There are nine sessions left until Nvidia's third-quarter report on November 17. It's convenient to keep the date in the economic calendar.
Did you hold Nvidia or Nasdaq through the weekend?
The news came out on Saturday. The position is locked until Monday morning: you can neither close it nor add to it. At prop firms this is a separate line in the rules: some ban holding through the weekend entirely, others count the gap at the open fully toward the daily drawdown. The account dies before your first click. These clauses are read before paying for a challenge, not on Sunday evening. Selecting by market and permitted style takes a couple of minutes.
