OPEC+ leaves production unchanged for December. The decision was announced on Saturday, November 1. Quotas remain at the current level.
What OPEC+ is. It is an association of oil-exporting countries led by Saudi Arabia and Russia. The alliance regulates production volumes and thus influences world prices. A quota is a production limit that a country has agreed not to exceed.
Why this matters to a trader. In December there is no new input on the supply side. Other factors will drive the oil price.
What exactly was decided?
Time of the decision - Saturday, around 15:30 Moscow time. December volumes are kept in full.
- No increase - no additional barrels were built into the plan
- No cut - the alliance did not reduce quotas either
- Duration - until the meeting on November 29, where volumes for January will be discussed
What drives the price now?
The balance of supply and demand will be determined not by the alliance's decisions but by external factors.
- Demand. How much oil the market actually takes.
- Inventories. Accumulated volumes held by consumers and exporters.
- Geopolitics. It arrives without a schedule.
What does this mean for a trader?
Oil reacts to OPEC+ meetings with sharp impulses. A "change nothing" decision often removes part of the expectations the market had priced in beforehand.
That is why the start of the week in oil contracts is the moment to watch the gap between Friday's closing price and the price of the first trades.
Key point: the decision on volumes is one of the few factors in oil with a precise date. All the others arrive without warning. For such a market it is easier to choose a challenge with suitable rules in advance.
What happens next?
The next point is November 29. It makes sense to keep this date in the economic calendar along with the other events of the month.
- Topic of the meeting - production volumes for January
- Until that date there are no announced changes in production policy
Did you hold oil through an OPEC+ meeting?
Oil is a market where a single message from Vienna moves the price by several dollars in a minute. Then the gap at the start of the week finishes off the stop at a price that never existed on the chart. That is exactly why some prop programs explicitly prohibit holding a position through weekends and through commodity meetings, while others consider such trades normal. The daily loss limit is also calculated differently by everyone: from the balance or from the account maximum. It makes more sense to sort this out before November 29, not after the account has been disabled.
