U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs saw $1.61 billion in outflows in October. This is the worst month for such funds since their launch. Bitcoin funds lost $515.03 million over the same month.
A spot ETF is an exchange-traded fund that holds the cryptocurrency itself. Through it, large investors buy Bitcoin or Ethereum like a regular stock. Outflows mean investors are redeeming shares and withdrawing money from the fund.
Why this matters to a trader. It is these flows, not analysts' forecasts, that set the direction of the month on the crypto market.
How did Bitcoin lose $515 million?
October became the fifth negative month of 2026 for Bitcoin ETFs. Of 21 trading sessions, there were inflows in only nine and outflows in 12.
- October 30 - $643.33 million - the largest withdrawal of the month
- October 22 - $635.49 million - the second-largest outflow
- October 21 - $528.4 million - the best day by inflow
- October 19 - $526.6 million - the second-best day
Week by week, the picture changed almost every five days.
- October 5-9. Outflow of $681.1 million.
- October 12-16. Another minus $228.58 million.
- October 19-23. Inflow of $304.73 million.
- The last week. Back into the red.
Why did the money split between funds?
Only two funds showed a plus. The other major players in the segment gave up money.
- IBIT from BlackRock - inflow of $931.82 million
- MSBT from Morgan Stanley - inflow of $34.64 million
- FBTC from Fidelity - minus $754.64 million
- ARKB from ARK 21Shares - minus $444.11 million
That is, money was not only leaving the market but also flowing from one fund to another.
What happened with Ethereum?
The entire blow landed on a single fund. ETHA from BlackRock lost $1.42 billion.
- ETHE from Grayscale - minus $119.08 million
- FETH from Fidelity - plus $36.13 million
- The Morgan Stanley fund - the second and last one to close the month in the plus
- $24.84 million - the maximum daily inflow, October 13
- $155.85 million - the outflow on October 30
What does this mean for a trader?
Altcoin funds diverged. BNB ETFs attracted $98.61 million, while SOL ETFs lost $143.71 million.
Large capital is not leaving crypto entirely. It is choosing specific assets and specific funds, and the conditions for working with such amplitude can be compared in the prop firm catalog or pick a challenge to suit your style.
The main thing: intraday moves remain strong, and it is flows, not forecasts, that set the direction of the month.
Did you sit in this market all of October?
In a single day, $600 million is pulled out of the funds. This is not a quiet market but a series of sharp moves without an overall trend. What usually prevents you from capturing them is not the idea but the nominal: the same amplitude on a deposit of a few thousand gives small change. Prop trading is when a trading account is provided by a company: you pay for the selection, work within its risk limits and share the profit. November has only just begun - there is time to understand the mechanics before the next such week.
