Morgan Stanley has converted US stocks and government bonds into tokenized form. The bank became one of the first clients of the new DTCC service. It announced this on X on November 3.
DTCC is the clearing center through which transactions in US securities pass. Tokenization means issuing a digital record on a blockchain that represents a real asset. The security remains in custody but receives a digital twin.
For a trader, this means the blockchain is entering the infrastructure for the circulation of US stocks and government debt.
What exactly did the bank do?
The DTCC Tokenization Service (DTS) launched on October 28. Five days later, Morgan Stanley confirmed that it was already using it.
Tokenization has been applied to securities held in custody at DTC. DTC is a DTCC division where US stocks and Treasuries are recorded.
Why does the bank need this?
Amy Oldenburg, head of digital asset strategy at Morgan Stanley, explained the mechanics. The service converts ordinary securities held in custody at DTC into tokenized form.
The stated goals are as follows:
- Increased liquidity - securities are easier to buy and sell.
- Simplified movement of assets that are used as collateral for transactions.
- More efficient use of capital.
When will trading begin?
The bank will add support for tokenized stocks in Q1 2027. This refers to its alternative trading system. This is the bank's closed venue for client transactions.
The previous deadline was set for the second half of 2026. Oldenburg called the new date more realistic.
How large is the market?
Oldenburg previously estimated the market for tokenized real-world assets at $3-10 trillion by 2030. This explains why major banks are entering the theme in advance.
Key point: settlement of US stocks and government debt will gradually become faster and more round-the-clock. It makes sense to study new venues and tickers in advance in the academy and consider which market to select a challenge for.
More and more instruments, but the same deposit?
Tokens on stocks and Treasuries are another list of tickers that will end up in the terminal in a year or two. But in a personal account with a couple of thousand dollars, even a successfully caught idea closes out with a dinner-sized sum. In prop trading, the company provides the capital for trades: you pass its risk test, trade its account, and keep part of what you earn. Working through the mechanics calmly now is cheaper than watching the new market from the sidelines.
