Whales on the Hyperliquid exchange have accumulated the maximum shorts on Bitcoin in 12 months. This was reported by the analytics company Glassnode, the publication came out on November 8 at 18:52 Moscow time.
What these positions are. A short is a trade betting on a price decline. "Whales" in such statistics are wallets with the largest position volume.
Why this matters to a trader. Large leverage has gathered on one side of the market. Such days produce sharper price movements.
What did the data show?
- Yearly maximum - the total short positions on BTC among whales are greater than at any other moment of the year
- Source - Glassnode estimate
- Publication time - November 8, 18:52 Moscow time
Why is this even visible?
It's about the venue. Hyperliquid is a decentralized perpetual futures exchange. Trades go through the blockchain, and position sizes are publicly visible.
On a regular exchange such data is closed. Here the position of a large address can be tracked and counted.
What does this mean for a trader?
This is not a direction signal. This is information about market structure: a large volume of leverage has gathered on one side.
- A move against the skew. When the skew is this noticeable, it hits these positions. Some are closed forcibly - this is liquidation, and the price spike turns out sharper than the news event alone would have produced.
- A move toward the shorts. Then the pressure intensifies on long positions instead.
The main point: days with skewed positioning more often produce choppy candles and wide slippage. Where BTC ultimately goes is not affected by this.
What to do next?
Look at risk, not at a forecast. Before such days it's worth checking your limits in advance and choosing a challenge suited to crypto and leverage.
Shorting BTC with leverage?
A leverage skew is those minutes when the price jerks by several percent without news. Prop firms have their own counters for such minutes. Some calculate drawdown by the current price within a trade, and you get knocked out by a candle wick. Others - only by closed positions. The difference in one line of the rules decides whether the account survives to your take profit or not. This can be seen in the terms in advance if you compare them for your market and leverage.
