Spot ETFs reversed: minus $171.5 million across Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana for the session

On October 14, American exchange-traded funds (ETFs - a fund through which an asset is bought like an ordinary stock) on Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana showed a combined net outflow of about $171.5 million. A day earlier, $200.5 million flowed into the same funds.

According to preliminary data from Farside Investors, $150.5 million was withdrawn from Bitcoin funds, $19.7 million from Ethereum, and $1.3 million from Solana. The figure is not final: BlackRock (IBIT) and Morgan Stanley (MSBT) had not reported at the time of the calculation. According to more complete data, the outflow for BTC on Wednesday was $262 million, and for ETH - $130 million.

The main seller of the day was Fidelity: $152.7 million left its Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC), although on Tuesday the same fund took in $103.1 million, and IBIT - $65.9 million. On Ethereum, withdrawals came from Grayscale Ethereum Mini (-$18.8 million) and Invesco QETH (-$0.9 million), on Solana - from Bitwise BSOL (-$1.3 million). The only one in the green was Bitwise BITB: +$2.2 million.

For the week since Monday, Bitcoin funds lost $151 million versus $681 million the week before, Ethereum - $190 million versus $542 million. Solana has been in outflow for the eighth session in a row (-$3 million for the week). The only category in the green is XRP: +$740 thousand on Wednesday.

The conclusion coincided with the release of US inflation data: BTC fell below $82,000, to $80,741, down 3.2% in a day. Before that, the funds had already given back $484.9 million on October 7 and $244.1 million on October 8.

Flows into ETFs are trades with fund shares, not the full picture of institutional ownership. But the change of sign from one session to the next says it plainly: big money is now reacting to every macro figure. The nearest update is the IBIT and ETHA reports for October 14.

Did you watch BTC tumble below $82,000?

The move was honest and readable: minus 3.2% in a day after the inflation figures. There is only one question - how much did a day like that give you personally. On a deposit of a couple thousand, it is an amount that is not even interesting to lock in. Prop trading works differently: the company allocates a trading account to someone who has passed the challenge, and shares the profit. It is worth understanding the mechanics before the next report like this.
