On October 19, the largest US bank, JPMorgan Chase, launched its deposit token JPM Coin (JPMD) on the Ethereum mainnet.

JPMD is not a stablecoin in the usual sense (a coin with an exchange rate pegged to the dollar, issued by a crypto company), but a direct obligation of a commercial bank for a dollar deposit.

Transfers are permitted only between whitelisted addresses; the token is unavailable to retail users.

The bank chose the Ethereum network because of its liquidity and the existing client base there.

What this token is. JPMD is not a stablecoin in the usual sense (a coin with an exchange rate pegged to the dollar, issued by a crypto company), but a direct obligation of a commercial bank on a dollar deposit. Transfers are permitted only between whitelisted addresses; the token is unavailable to retail users.

Why. According to Emma Landrio, head of Kinexys Labs (JPMorgan's blockchain division), crypto companies will be able to use the asset for on-chain payments, while financial institutions will use it for transaction settlements and as collateral. The bank chose the Ethereum network because of its liquidity and the existing client base there.

How the expansion unfolded.

November 2025 - launch of JPMD on Base (Coinbase's layer-2 network)

December 2025 - launch of the tokenized fund MONY on Ethereum

January 2026 - plans announced for integration into Canton Network

October 2026 - Ethereum mainnet

What this means. The bank with the largest market capitalization in the world is moving settlements for tokenized assets and collateral onto a public network where you trade ETH. This is not an inflow of money into ETH itself as an asset, but an inflow of infrastructure: institutional settlement volumes flow through the same network. For a trader, this is an argument in favor of Ethereum remaining the primary venue for major players, not just a venue for speculation.

Holding ETH and watching headlines like these?

Banks are entering the network with balances in the billions, while a private trader has the same chart and a deposit of a couple thousand. The idea may be absolutely correct, but the payoff from it is a number you don't notice at the end of the month. Prop trading removes precisely the notional limit: you pass the challenge and then trade on the company's trading account. While the market is in a phase of infrastructure news, there is time to calmly understand how this scheme works.
